Meet Jeana L. Summers, DO

Born and raised in a small town in Southeastern New Mexico, Dr. Jeana Summers attended Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri and pursued medical school at Des Moines University in Des Moines, Iowa. She completed her orthopedic surgery residency in Oklahoma City, where she met her husband, followed by subspecialty fellowship training in pediatric orthopedics at Phoenix Children's Hospital in Arizona.

Dr. Summers joined Orthopedic + Fracture Specialists in Portland to serve the Pacific Northwest community she is proud to call home. At the heart of her practice is a compassionate, holistic philosophy. Trained as an osteopathic physician, Dr. Summers views each child not merely as a diagnosis, but as a whole, vibrant individual. She integrates advanced orthopedic care with a thoughtful, patient-first approach, fostering a supportive, collaborative environment where families feel heard, guided, and empowered throughout the healing process.

Her primary focus spans pediatrics, adolescents, and young adults from birth through age 25, specializing in sports injuries, fractures, spinal deformities, guided growth, osteotomies, lower extremity deformities, and complex reconstructive care. Additionally, Dr. Summers welcomes patients of any age, from infants to supercentenarians, for the evaluation and management of fractures, sports injuries, and knee conditions.

Dr. Summers and her husband, who coaches football and wrestling, are the proud parents of a busy blended family of teenagers and a newborn. Outside the clinic, she enjoys exploring the Pacific Northwest, whether kayaking local waters, hiking scenic trails, tending to her backyard flock, or enjoying winter snow sports with her family. When relaxing at home, she loves curling up with a good book or watching an intriguing documentary. As both a physician and a parent, she understands the vital role movement plays in health and considers it a true privilege to help put your life back in motion.

Short Arm Cast Application

Short Arm Cast Care Instructions

Keep the cast dry. The padding inside the cast cannot get wet. If it does get wet, let your care team know. Moisture trapped beneath the cast can irritate or damage the skin.
Cover the cast when showering. One option is to use two trash bags. Place the first bag over the cast and secure it at the top with duct tape. Place a washcloth around the top to help absorb any water that seeps through, then add a second trash bag and secure it with duct tape. You can also purchase a reusable waterproof cast cover online or at many pharmacies and major retailers.
Do not put anything inside the cast. Even if the skin becomes itchy, avoid using objects to scratch underneath the cast. This can damage the skin and potentially lead to an infection.
Keep the cast away from others. A cast is hard and can cause injury, so do not use it to hit or bump other people.
Watch for rough or sharp edges. If an edge of the cast is irritating the skin, you can gently smooth it with a nail file.
Cool it safely. If the cast feels warm or itchy, use a fan or a hair dryer on the cool setting. Do not use heat.
Cast removal. Once your fracture has healed enough, you will return to the office to have the cast safely removed.

If your cast becomes wet, damaged, increasingly painful, or begins irritating your skin, contact your orthopedic care team for guidance.
