Athletic Training Residency Program

Orthopedic + Fracture Specialists' 12-month Athletic Training Residency Program was founded in 2016. Located in Portland, Oregon, Orthopedic + Fracture Specialists created the program to advance the knowledge of musculoskeletal clinical evaluation and diagnosis of certified athletic trainers.

The Athletic Training Residency Program at Orthopedic + Fracture is designed to incorporate the resident into the every-day clinical functions of our organization. You will assist our physicians in diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic conditions as a member of our team. You will also learn how to promote the athletic training profession within this emerging setting through research and by developing as a leader within the organization. Residency start and end days are typically flexible, but anticipated to start late June to early July.

Applications will be accepted through January, 10 2024 - March 10, 2024. Phone interviews will be conducted for top applicants, followed by a second round of interviews for selected candidates - these may be hosted on site vs. virtual. Our Mission

The mission of the Athletic Training Residency Program at Orthopedic + Fracture is to advance the athletic training resident’s knowledge of orthopedic care and to develop skills in the areas of musculoskeletal evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment. You will become an integral member of the physicians’ practice while enhancing the quality of patient care.

Our Vision

We are committed to producing excellent certified athletic trainers to continue their careers in the physician practice setting and to develop skills that will allow them to evolve their roles into administrative and managerial positions. We emphasize efficiency of movement and a team approach to patient centered healthcare.

Program Curriculum

This program is comprehensive and includes the following:

  • Documentation of history and physical examination
  • Management of clinic flow and implementation of improvement initiatives
  • Musculoskeletal evaluation and diagnosis
  • Radiograph interpretations
  • Communication with physicians, medical assistants, PAs, and patients
  • Casting, bracing, and splinting
  • Assisting with durable medical equipment fitting, education, and billing
  • Assisting with in-office procedures
  • Assisting in the operating room (including sterile technique)
  • Post-operative care including suture removal, dressing changes, and patient education
  • Insurance billing and coding
  • Required government performance/outcomes measures
  • Patient phone calls / triage
  • Phone calls from outside medical providers
  • Optional outreach/event coverage to local area high schools and club sports
  • 3 Case reports
  • 4 Essays
  • 4 Presentations for office staff and ATCs
Retention Policies
  • Salary
    • The athletic training resident position is an hourly paid position with benefits including paid time off, continuing education stipend, health insurance, dental insurance, and company attire
  • Attendance and participation
    • Fully engage in all required didactic and clinical responsibilities.
      • If unable, written statement must be made to the residency director and medical director.
    • Maintain a satisfactory level of clinical competency and maintain a satisfactory score on clinical evaluations
      • If unable, the residency director and the resident will meet on a weekly basis to explore areas of improvement in order to attain satisfactory levels by the next evaluation.
    • Adhere to all professional and ethical values set forth by O+FS.
    • Adhere to all policies and procedures set forth by O+FS as outlined in the employee handbook.
Application Process

We will be accepting applications until March 10, 2024.

Candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience as a certified athletic trainer OR Master’s degree or intent to graduate with a Master’s degree prior to the start of the program
  • Current ATC certification through the Board of Certification
  • Athletic training licensure through the state of Oregon (or eligible)
  • Current certification in CPR/AED
  • Current NPI number
  • OTC certification through the NBCOT (or eligible to sit for the examination)
    a. OTC certification is required to assist in the operating room

  • A commitment to learning and mastery of the skills and concepts outlined in the program curriculum.
  • A strong desire to further the profession of athletic training the setting of physician practices.
  • The ability to work independently and take initiative to solve problems and make improvements to daily clinical workflow.
  • The ability to work as part of a large team which includes the medical assistant, physician assistants, athletic trainers, ancillary staff, and administrators.
