At the intersection of medicine and communication is where Dr. Nicole Kellan Behnke feels the most professionally "at home." She believes that, as a physician and surgeon, her primary role is to provide information to patients, and foster open and understandable dialogue, so that each individual patient feels confident in their ability to move forward with collaborative decision-making that best fits their unique goals in life. As her primary clinical practice is community trauma and fracture care, Dr. Behnke is often treating individuals who need, but may not want, a doctor; she prides herself on her ability to compassionately help these patients and their families move through what can be an overwhelming life event with respect and dignity. She also feels strongly about working towards equitable access to quality health care for all populations.

Originally from the Midwest, Dr. Nicole Kellan Behnke completed her undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Michigan before moving to California for her Orthopedic residency training at LA County-Harbor UCLA Medical Center. A second cross-country move followed for fellowship training in musculoskeletal oncology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. After several years in an academic clinical practice in Alabama, Dr. Behnke undertook her final big move to land in Portland, OR and she is thrilled to now call the Pacific Northwest her home.

Dr. Behnke is a member of the Wilderness Medical Society, a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine, an educator and volunteer in austere-environment Orthopaedics, a trail runner, hiker, skier, and adventurer who loves the mountains. She is also a classically trained pianist, and a parent to two energetic and adventurous young children, with whom she enjoys sharing her all-seasons outdoor enthusiasm and activities.
