In the past, total joint replacement (TJR) procedures were performed in an inpatient setting and required that a patient remain in the hospital for several days after surgery. Our fellowship-trained joint replacement surgeons at Orthopedic + Fracture Specialists (O+FS) have been pioneers in utilizing less-invasive surgical techniques and rapid-recovery protocols and now are performing most TJR procedures in the outpatient setting in our ambulatory surgery center, Center for Specialty Surgery (CSS). This means most patients are discharged to their homes the same day they have TJR surgery.
What sets O+FS Apart for Outpatient TJR?
-
More effective pain control. Anesthesia experts work closely with our surgeons to maximize use of “regional” pain control, with numbing agents used to block pain from the surgical area. Regional pain control means patients require less general anesthesia, which allows for a faster immediate postoperative recovery.
- Advances in surgical techniques. Our surgeons have been trained in various modern surgical techniques, including reverse total shoulder replacement, partial knee replacements, anterior approach hip replacements, and mini-posterior hip replacements, to various types of technology-assisted procedures. We can choose a technique suited to each patient’s specific needs, to ensure less cutting of soft tissues and facilitate quicker recovery, while reducing postoperative pain.
- Included physical therapy (PT) services. Studies have shown that getting patients out of bed and walking the same day they have surgery can lead to faster discharge and a quicker recovery with fewer complications. Our outpatient TJR patients have their first PT sessions within 1-2 hours of surgery, which can help muscle strength, balance, and range of motion improve more quickly.
- Lower risk of infection.Hospitals and rehab facilities are often treating numerous sick patients with severe infections. Having surgery at an outpatient center significantly reduces your exposure to these bacteria, reducing the risk of having a wound infection after surgery.
