Profile
Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Richard Southgate feels completely at home here in Portland, his father’s hometown. His mother – a nurse – imbued in him a love for science and a desire to help others from a young age, so medicine was a natural career choice. Educated at Carleton College, University of Chicago, Mayo Clinic, University of Rochester, and University of California San Francisco, Dr. Southgate is fellowship-trained in hip and knee replacement. Dr. Southgate specializes in hip replacement surgery through the anterior, posterior, and lateral approaches; total and partial knee replacement; and complex revision surgery.
"What attracted me to orthopedic surgery and joint replacements was their pronounced effect on the quality of life. My main goal is to get patients back to their hobbies and be as independent as possible.” Dr. Southgate believes that the precise treatment varies based on the patient, and shared decision-making is paramount in determining a plan of care. Another benefit of joint replacement surgery is the patient population: working with those well into retirement age is especially rewarding for Dr. Southgate as the elderly population is often can be overlooked in our society. In true Orthopedic + Fracture Specialists fashion, he strives to treat all of his patients as if they were his own family.
Having spent part of his childhood in his mother’s native country of Ecuador, he has native fluency of Spanish which has led him to be involved in several medical missions throughout Latin America. Most of his volunteer time is now focused on Operation Walk, an organization dedicated to providing orthopedic surgeries to those most in need of life-changing procedures, ensuring that they have the ability to work, move, and engage in life. In his spare time, Dr. Southgate enjoys watching college football, running, bicycling, and enjoying the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
